Over 700 different species of bacteria live there, forming a unique oral microbiome. While many of them support our immune system, some can become the source of serious health issues - not just within the mouth, but throughout the entire body.

🔍 From mouth to brain - the path of bacteria

Research shows that pathogens associated with gum disease, such as Treponema denticola, can enter the bloodstream and reach internal organs - including the brain. They’ve been found in atherosclerotic plaques in patients with vascular disease and in the brains of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

🧠 Bacteria and mental health

Some bacteria can travel along nerves, allowing them to bypass the blood-brain barrier. This means they can remain undetected for years, later affecting the nervous system. Their presence is thought to contribute to mood disorders, chronic brain inflammation, and the accelerated development of neurodegenerative changes.

🦷 Periodontitis - more than just a gum problem

Gum disease is one of the most common inflammatory diseases worldwide. It affects up to half the population and - although often underestimated - can have serious systemic consequences. It impacts both soft tissue and bone, leading to tooth loss and chronic inflammation.

🧬 Microbiome diagnostics - the key to prevention

Modern microbiological diagnostics allow us to detect specific pathogenic bacteria in the mouth. This not only helps tailor the right treatment (such as antibiotic therapy) but also assess the risk of systemic diseases.

In summary: Oral health isn’t just about appearances. It’s a crucial part of your overall health - including neurological wellbeing. If you want to take care of your body and mind, start with... your toothbrush and regular checkups.
